*Gov. Whitmer Calls on Michigan Representatives to Reject Extreme Republican Budget Bill Raising Cost of Health Care, Groceries to Cut Taxes for the Wealthy*
"Republican budget passed by U.S. Senate now heads to the U.S. House for final passage before being signed into law"
*LANSING, Mich. *– Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued the following statement calling on members of Michigan’s congressional delegation in the U.S. House of Representatives to reject the extreme Republican budget bill that was passed today by the U.S. Senate. The bill raises grocery and utility bills for working families, terminates health care for millions of Americans, and would result in the layoffs of hundreds of thousands of workers. Middle-class Americans will bear the brunt of these consequences while the Republican bill delivers a huge tax cut for the wealthy and adds $4.2 trillion to our national debt.
“The Republican budget bill under consideration by the U.S. House of Representatives this week will terminate health care for hundreds of thousands of Michiganders, rip away food assistance from working families, and jack up costs on the middle class while giving a huge tax cut to the wealthy. I encourage every member of Michigan’s congressional delegation, Republican and Democrat, to come together and vote NO.
“The bill will have a devastating impact on people’s lives, including the nearly 15,000 people who wrote in and shared their stories with my office. Cuts to Medicaid will hurt vulnerable Michiganders most, including three in five nursing home residents, people living with disabilities, and pregnant women. The largest ever cut to SNAP included in this budget will raise the cost of groceries, increase hunger, and harm thousands of local retailers, forcing more Michiganders to go to bed with a pit in their stomach.
“I encourage all the Democrats and Republicans in our congressional delegation including Representatives John James, Tom Barrett, and Bill Huizenga to think about the choice they face. A vote to pass this budget is a vote to terminate health care and skyrocket the cost of food for your constituents. I implore you all to vote no.
“We also know that the budget will significantly weaken our state’s and country’s finances. We cannot backfill the massive hole in our budget that this budget will cause with state funding alone and we are further burdening future generations with an extra $4.2 trillion of debt.
“Instead, let’s vote this cruel, fiscally irresponsible budget down and collaborate to help families in Michigan and across America succeed by delivering on the kitchen-table issues. Vote NO today and let’s work together tomorrow.”
*Key Numbers about the Republican Budget Bill*
* Terminates health care for 16 million Americans, including hundreds of thousands Michiganders.
* Kicks 120,000 Michiganders off their Healthy Michigan (Affordable Care Act) plans.
* Puts 5.4 million more Americans in medical debt.
* Cuts $1.1 trillion from health care to deliver a $1 trillion tax cut for the rich.
* Adds $4.2 trillion to the national debt.
