I know that this is an uncertain time for so many Washingtonians.

I hope recent events have marked a turning point in American history -- one that will see us turn toward justice and address the systemic racism that haunts our country. One key step on that path to equality is for Congress to take action and pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

I am an original cosponsor of the Justice in Policing Act, led by the Congressional Black Caucus and House Democrats. Our legislation will bring much-needed -- and overdue -- change to the way we police our communities. Among its other provisions, the Justice in Policing Act bans chokeholds, creates a national registry of police misconduct, and establishes lynching as a federal hate crime.

We also remain in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. We've lost over 100,000 American lives to COVID-19, and tens of millions of Americans have lost their jobs. House Democrats continue to build on the work of our coronavirus relief packages, including the Heroes Act.

We must work to save jobs as we focus on protecting public health and saving lives. My employee retention plan was included in the Heroes Act and is gaining bipartisan support -- it is estimated to help save 60 million American jobs by helping 6.1 million businesses keep their employees on the payroll with benefits.

We're still waiting on Mitch McConnell to move this legislation through the Senate.

And today, we celebrate Father's Day.

While this Father's Day might look different than others -- many of us are continuing to practice social distancing and might not be able to celebrate in person with loved ones -- I believe it is more important than ever for us to take time to take stock and express our gratitude to our families, friends, and loved ones whenever possible. I encourage you to take a moment today to say thank you to a father in your life.

I hope this Father's Day finds you safe, well, and able to connect with your family safely.

Below, you will find more information about the work we're doing together throughout our region to support our communities during the coronavirus pandemic and to continue to stand up and speak out for equality.

Thank you,

Suzan DelBene
