Civil Rights Rollbacks Hurt Real People
Hello! The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was not just a policy victory; it was a promise to generations that they would be treated with dignity, fairness, and equality regardless of the color of their skin. But that promise has been broken over and over again during Trump’s tenure in the White House. Trump’s Department of Education actively discriminates against students. His Department of Housing and Urban Development eliminated rules meant to root out housing segregation. His Department of Justice has deprioritized investigations into police violence and voter suppression. These weren’t just policy changes; they were direct attacks on the heart of the Civil Rights Act. These rollbacks hurt Black and Brown communities the most, but they also revealed something deeper: the rights we take for granted are not guaranteed unless we protect them. As we approach the anniversary of this transformative law tomorrow, let’s remember: the Civil Rights Act was never meant to sit on a shelf. It was meant to be enforced. It was meant to evolve. And it’s up to us to defend it. Tomorrow, we reflect and recommit. P.S. Want to join the fight using just your social media account?
