A Lawless Supreme Court Strikes Again | Leah Litman Joins Susan J. Demas

Stay to the end for a cameo from Ms. Stevie.

Susan J. Demas

It’s that time of year when the Supreme Court issues a firehose of opinions (one usually worse than the next.)

Leah Litman, the University of Michigan law professor and author of Lawless: How the Supreme Court Runs on Conservative Grievance, Fringe Theories, and Bad Vibes, returns to Lincoln Square to break down rulings in the cases regarding deportations of non-citizens to random countries, birthright citizenship, and transgender youth health care.

Heaping more power onto the executive branch is one of the key through-lines of so many SCOTUS opinions this term.

“I literally have been talking about the Supreme Court in terms of them fashioning law and legal rules for lawlessness — like coming up with excuse after excuse about why there is no consequence to violating the law or why different laws can't be enforced,” Leah notes.

Leah talks to Lincoln Square Executive Editor Susan J. Demas about what we can do to fight back. And, knowing that Leah is a diehard Swiftie, Susan asks her what Taylor Swift song sums up SCOTUS these days. (Hint: It’s off Lover.) Leah also gets an assist from her mini golden-doodle, Ms. Stevie, who dropped by the end of the interview.
