Email from Rep. Malliotakis Here's a quick update on what I've been working on during a busy few weeks in Washington, DC, Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn My friend, Here's a quick update on what I've been working on during a busy few weeks in Washington, DC, Staten Island, and Southern Brooklyn... HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE HILL SUPPORTING STATEN ISLAND'S ECONOMY This month, I met with the Staten Island Board of Realtors to continue our work to deliver a higher SALT deduction, make our housing stock more affordable, and help first time buyers. I also met with the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce in Washington to discuss the impact of tariffs and the multiple beneficial tax provisions we are working to make permanent. Small businesses are the backbone of our community and our country, and we will continue our work to provide tax & regulation relief so they can thrive. STOPPING WASHINGTON DC'S NON-CITIZEN VOTING LAW WATCH This month, Democrats continued their misguided push to let non-citizens vote in our elections. In response, Congress is exercising our constitutional obligation to stop Washington DC’s non-citizens voting law, just like we sued and stopped NYC’s law. Only American citizens can and should vote in elections! SUPPORTING WORKING AND MIDDLE CLASS HOMEOWNERS I joined Rep. Tom Suozzi from the Housing for US Coalition, and Gary LaBarbera the President of the Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York, in a bipartisan push to advocate for the release of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. This initiative is aimed at increasing pathways to homeownership for working- and middle-class Americans like cops, firefighters, teachers, carpenters and tilers. Many of these hardworking Americans often find themselves in limbo because they don’t make enough to afford market rate but make too much to qualify for affordable housing. This is an opportunity to deliver critical assistance to hard working Americans. WAYS AND MEANS HEARING WITH TREASURY SECRETARY BESSENT At our Ways and Means hearing, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that 1.4 million illegal immigrants are benefitting from Medicaid dollars that should be going to our vulnerable citizens. This misuse of taxpayer dollars is unacceptable, and House Republicans are taking action with the Big, Beautiful Bill. At this hearing, I also disused my legislation Medical Supply Chain Resiliency Act (H.R. 22) that would allow the President to enter into Trusted Trade Partner Agreements with allies to diversify and expand networks to secure a reliable supply chain of medical devices, pharmaceuticals & ingredients. READ MORE WAYS AND MEANS HEARING WITH SOCIAL SECURITY COMMISSIONER BISIGNANO At our Ways and Means hearing with Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano, I stressed the need to improve customer service, including expanding in-person appointments and reducing phone wait times. As we are on the cusp of finally eliminating taxes on social security for most seniors, we must also ensure the benefits they’ve earned are easily accessible! LEADING THE PUSH TO ELIMINATE BURDENSOME IRS PAPERWORK FOR ONLINE SELLERS As a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, I will continue working to cut red tape from burdensome 1099-K reporting requirements so small business owners can stop wasting time on unnecessary paperwork and instead use their energy to create new opportunities for their small businesses. We will work to protect casual sellers from unnecessary and excessive reporting requirements by raising the threshold to $20,000 for those completing a minimum of 200 transactions. This month, I welcomed to the US Capitol, Vivian Vassar, a Staten Island small business owner and founder of “Hey Viv,” an online retro clothing store that’s been in business for over 35 years. We advocated for this change to the Biden-era policy and attended the launch of the bipartisan Recommerce Caucus dedicated to supporting these online small businesses. READ MORE WELCOMING THIS YEAR'S CONGRESSIONAL ART COMPETITION WINNER I welcomed Brooklynite & LaGuardia High School student Tammy Liang to Washington to congratulate her on winning this year’s Congressional Art Competition. Her artwork will be on display in the U.S. Capitol with the art of other talented teens for the next year, be sure to check it out on your next visit! IN THE DISTRICT WELCOMING THIS YEAR'S MILITARY ACADEMY NOMINEES AND UPCOMING INFORMATION NIGHT I met with a group of exceptional students who we nominated to attend our nation’s military academies. These young people are our nation’s future and we couldn’t be more proud of them! If you are a high school student interested in our military academies, please join us on Tuesday, July 8 at 6:00 PM at Staten Island's Cespino Russo American Legion Post for an open house on this year’s U.S. Service Academy application process and learn about the requirements. UPGRADES COMING TO STATEN ISLAND'S ST. GEORGE FERRY TERMINAL The Staten Island Ferry is an essential transportation link, connecting nearly half a million Staten Islanders to jobs, services, and opportunities across the city. We helped to secure $5,750,000 million in federal funding through the Federal Transit Administration’s Passenger Ferry Grant Program to support critical upgrades at Staten Island’s St. George Ferry Terminal. This funding will support long-overdue upgrades that enhance safety and improve the overall passenger experience. READ MORE CELEBRATING TOTTENVILLE STUDENTS & STOPPED BY THE BOARDWALK BASH We congratulate Tottenville High School on an incredible year in athletics! With six PSAL championships across baseball, bowling, flag football, golf, and both JV and varsity softball, these student-athletes have demonstrated tremendous talent, dedication, and teamwork. Go Pirates! I also stopped by Assemblyman Mike Tannousis’ Annual Boardwalk Bash, where I enjoyed connecting with constituents. I’m proud to have originally sponsored this event as a State Assemblymember, and I’m glad to see Assemblyman Tannousis continuing the tradition. NYPD VERRAZZANO 10-13 ASSOCIATION PICNIC I stopped by the NYPD's Verrazzano 10-13 Association picnic to thank our retired officers for their service to our city. We’re proud of our work delivering funding for our NYPD and supporting common sense public safety policies! IN CASE YOU MISSED IT Bipartisan Legislators Want More People to Shop Secondhand For Malliotakis, one of the biggest concerns is tackling tax burdens for small businesses and resellers as well as fighting counterfeits, with the added benefit of cutting waste. “It’s sustainable, it helps the environment, there’s less trash and you make somebody else happy,” she said. READ MORE ‘More Americans will die’ if we don’t fix this problem: Lawmakers press medical supply chain bill Rep.
