Hey John,

We have incredible news: After public outcry and pressure from March For
Our Lives organizers and advocates like you, the New Jersey Legislature
restored the full $1 million in funding for the Gun Violence Research
Center at Rutgers University!

Governor Murphy had proposed cutting this critical funding, a decision
that would've gutted lifesaving research on safe gun storage, community
violence intervention, and prevention strategies. But we refused to let
that happen.

This year especially, huge wins like this can feel hard to come by. That’s
why it’s important to celebrate wins like these.

This victory in New Jersey shows exactly what’s possible when young people
stand up, speak out, and demand action. We sent letters, raised our
voices, and made it crystal clear: You can’t defund life-saving gun
violence research while our communities are still grieving and lives are
still being lost. Not on our watch.

Today’s win is a powerful reminder of our strength. But our work is far
from over. We need your continued support to keep fighting and winning.

John,

Since January, the Trump administration has been gutting the programs that
help us understand and prevent gun violence.

In the name of “government efficiency,” they shut down programs that
helped local law enforcement recognize threats and prevent mass shootings.
They erased databases tracking domestic terror and targeted violence —
leaving communities without the critical information they need to stay
safe.

Now, even at the state level, critical work is under threat.

In New Jersey, Governor Phil Murphy has proposed slashing $1 million from
the New Jersey Gun Violence Research Center at Rutgers University — a cut
that would wipe out a third of the center’s budget and cripple its
lifesaving work.

This center is one of only a handful of state-funded hubs advancing real
solutions to gun violence, researching topics like safe storage and
community violence interventions.

Without this research, prevention becomes guesswork, and more lives are
put at risk.

At March For Our Lives, we believe that preventing violence must be at the
heart of public safety. It starts with research, early intervention, and
understanding the roots of violence before tragedy strikes.

We are organizing to protect that work, and demanding a future where every
community has the tools they need to stay safe.
