When Israel’s attacks on Iran began before dawn on June 13, explosions shattered the homes of some of Iran’s top scientists, killing nine people who had worked for decades on Tehran’s nuclear program. All nine were killed in near-simultaneous attacks to prevent them from going into hiding, according to people familiar with the attacks. Eleven days later, hours before a cease-fire brokered by the U.S. and Qatar took effect Wednesday, an attack in northern Iran killed another scientist, Sayyed Seddighi Saber, according to Israeli and Iranian state media. He was sanctioned just weeks ago by the U.S. for his nuclear weapons-related work.

Frankfurter Rundschau: Attacks on Jews closer than expected: Iran probably targeted targets in Germany

The threat posed by Iranian saboteurs is nothing new. "As early as 2012, Iran carried out an attack on Israeli tourists in Bulgaria through Hezbollah operatives," Middle East expert and terrorism expert Hans-Jakob Schindler of the Counter Extremism Project told the Frankfurter Rundschau newspaper a few days ago . Added to this is a relatively new phenomenon: Radical institutions and regimes are increasingly collaborating with gangsters who carry out attacks and murders on their behalf. Times of Israel: Israel was facing destruction at the hands of Iran. This is how close it came, and how it saved itself

The Iranian regime was increasingly convinced in recent months that it would soon be able to destroy Israel. The “Destruction of Israel” clock in Tehran’s Palestine Square was not an exercise in bravado. It was a public countdown to what the ayatollahs believed was Israel’s imminent demise, at their hands. Along with dismay that Yahya Sinwar had failed to consult and coordinate with them before invading southern Israel on October 7, 2023, the regime drew encouragement from the success of that massacre, its apparent confirmation of Israel’s vulnerability, and the ongoing instability it had caused.

The Guardian: Sleeper cells and threat warnings: how the US-Iran conflict is spinning up fear

As the war between Iran and Israel intensified, teasing the eventual involvement of the US military, American security agencies began to warn of a looming threat of Tehran-backed “sleeper cells” known to be active stateside that could be called in for retaliatory attacks. But as the B-2 bombers struck nuclear sites across Iran and the Iranian military responded with a missile barrage on US bases in the region, a ceasefire took shape. In the end, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) – Iran’s elite military and intelligence branch, wielding a global web of terrorist groups and agents acting on its behalf – didn’t appear to sponsor or carry out any covert operations inside the US, nor has it since.

The discovery of Roley's body on Canfield Mountain, a popular hiking destination outside the city of Coeur d’Alene, culminated six hours of chaos that saw about 300 local, state, and federal officers flock to the area. BILD: Right-wing extremist youth groups on the rise in Germany

"The fact that people involved in right-wing extremism are becoming increasingly younger is not a new phenomenon," reads the response from the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, as reported by Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND). But this time something is different - and more dangerous: what is new is that the relevant "radicalization processes are now also making the leap into the real world across the board and leading to real groups and right-wing extremist actions". The Office for the Protection of the Constitution even openly speaks of a danger to life and limb: "Due to the now consolidated structures and the action orientation of the new youth groups that emerged in 2024, there is an abstract danger to life and limb, especially for members of the LGBTIQ movement, the left-wing scene and people with a migration background."

It is only an approximation, and yet there are other cases among them that raise questions, such as a history teacher. He held a leading position in the German fraternity, the controversial umbrella organization that experts classify as belonging to the political right-wing fringe and which repeatedly appeared in public. In his speeches, he criticized the so-called zeitgeist, seeing Germany in the hands of an alleged "American supremacy". "The only free nation in Europe that could help us on this path is the Russian one," he said in a speech in 2014, for example. "The Russian Federation is strong enough to support us in this quest for freedom."
