Editor’s Note. ADL is heartbroken over the death of Karen Diamond, who succumbed to injuries from a June 1 antisemitic firebombing during a “Run for Their Lives” event in

Boulder, Colorado. She is the third person killed in an act of antisemitic violence in the U.S. this year. The suspect, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, faces over 90 charges, including federal hate crimes and multiple counts of murder and attempted murder. The attack injured at least 29 individuals. “This heinous attack highlights the danger of normalized antisemitic rhetoric,”

said ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt. ADL Mountain States Regional Director Susan Rona added that the tragedy underscores the urgent need for action. Soliman could face life in prison if convicted.

New York. ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt appeared on
[link removed]
MSNBC’s Morning Joe Monday to discuss the phrase “Globalize the Intifada,” warning of its violent implications and its growing presence in both campus activism and consequences to the New York City mayoral race. Greenblatt explained that the intifada was a period marked by suicide bombings, shootings and stabbings targeting Israeli civilians. Greenblatt noted that the slogan has been popularized by student activist groups like Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) that have targeted and marginalized Jewish students over the past year.

Boston. Two Jewish students are suing MIT and tenured professor Michel DeGraff for

alleged antisemitic harassment and discrimination. The suit claims DeGraff doxxed one student, Lior Alon, tagging his photo with anti-Israel commentary online, which allegedly led to threats against him and his family. The second student, William Sussman, says DeGraff accused him of having a

“Zionist mind infection” in mass emails and linked him to Hamas-style imagery posted around campus. Despite formal complaints, MIT declined to investigate, stating the conduct wasn’t based on their religion. Sussman ultimately left his PhD program, citing an unsafe environment. The plaintiffs argue MIT failed to protect Jewish students, allowing hostility to escalate unchecked.

Washington D.C. At the March on Washington for Jewish Civil Rights, House Education and Workforce Committee Chair Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI) reaffirmed the

committee’s commitment to investigating antisemitism on U.S. college campuses. “Fighting antisemitism means we must understand it,” he told the crowd, warning that university leaders who ignore rising Jew-hatred are “part of the problem.” Walberg criticized schools that tolerate harassment masked as anti-Zionism and pledged continued accountability for university leadership. The march, held at the U.S. Capitol, honored Israeli embassy staffers Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim, who were killed last month in an antisemitic shooting near the Capital Jewish Museum. Organizers called the event a vital step in defending Jewish civil rights. Chairman
Walberg’s committee will continue its

inquiry into campus antisemitism. On June 26, Walberg issued follow-up document requests to DePaul, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and Haverford. The committee’s

DOJ. The Department of Justice has launched an investigation into the University of California over concerns that its hiring practices

may violate Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, which bars discrimination based on race, sex and other protected categories. The probe will examine whether the UC 2030 Capacity Plan led to unlawful employment decisions across UC campuses. DOJ officials emphasized that no conclusions have been reached and the investigation remains ongoing. In response, a UC spokesperson said the system is “committed to fair and lawful processes” and will cooperate with the DOJ in good faith.

UK. Goldsmiths College in London issued a formal apology after an independent inquiry found it allowed a

longstanding “culture” of antisemitism that left Jewish students and staff feeling unsafe and unwelcome. The report, led by Mohinderpal Sethi KC,
[link removed]
detailed disturbing incidents ranging from swastika graffiti and desecrated religious items to staff endorsing antisemitic tropes and ignoring student concerns. One Jewish student was forced to move out due to harassment, while the campus Jewish society disbanded for safety reasons. The university pledged to adopt the inquiry’s recommendations, including reforms to anti-racism training to recognize antisemitism, different support services and reporting mechanisms. A two-year action plan will be led by Professor Adam Dinham, alongside a new advisory panel. Jewish student leaders have called for urgent follow-through to ensure real accountability.

Tennessee. A Knox County grand jury has

indicted 12 pro-Palestinian protesters, including University of Tennessee students, for criminal trespassing during a 2024 Nakba Day rally on campus. The charges come more than a year after May 2024 arrests. The demonstrators had called on the university to sever ties with Israeli companies and disclose financial investments. Attorneys for the protesters say their clients will plead not guilty and pursue jury trials, citing alleged First Amendment violations. Two of the protesters have also filed federal lawsuits against the university and local law enforcement, claiming discrimination and retaliation for their political and religious expression.

New Rabbi, New Support. ADL Midwest has been working closely with leadership at the University of Minnesota, including Minnesota Hillel and Chabad. Rabbi Jill Avrin has been named the

first Director of Campus Affairs at the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas. A longtime supporter of Hillel and Jewish student life, Avrin was inspired to take the role after witnessing a campus memorial disrupted by protesters. In this new position, she’ll work with students, faculty and administrators to support Jewish life, foster dialogue, and help ensure students feel safe expressing their identity. Avrin hopes to ensure that Jewish students “don’t need to fear that they have to hide their Jewish identity” and build bridges through dialogue across campuses.

Shabbat Swagger. UC San Diego celebrated

Jewish American Heritage Month with a vibrant Shabbat dinner hosted by the Jewish Faculty & Staff Tritons Association, drawing a diverse crowd of students, faculty and community leaders. The evening featured kosher‑halal cuisine by Spice Kitchen, thoughtful remarks from campus counselors and faculty — including reflections on resilience and solidarity following a synagogue firebombing — and keynote speeches from Hillel of San Diego and campus leaders. Student voices took center stage in programming, with awards presented to student leaders, blessings led by students and clergy and even a surprise appearance by San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria. The event underscored UCSD’s
commitment to building an inclusive community rooted in light, dialogue and collective support.

In this episode, host Luda Isakharov shares her journey from facing antisemitism as a student to becoming student body president and now ADL's Assistant Regional Director in Washington DC. Born to Soviet immigrants, Luda often felt isolated as the only Jewish student in her schools. Her awakening came at University of Oregon when she discovered the BDS movement and realized she was alone as a Jewish voice in student government — initially leading her to hide her identity to survive politically. This experience fueled her determination to run for student body president and now guide other Jewish students facing similar challenges. Tune in for a story of courage, conviction, and giving
back.
