Dear John,

The Senate has passed their version of the Republican budget bill – it now heads back to the House of Representatives, giving us one more chance to stop this disastrous spending bill. I voted against it once and I’ll oppose it again.

Here is why:

KICKS MILLIONS OF AMERICANS OFF OF THEIR HEALTH INSURANCE

The bill will put 44,000 of our neighbors at risk of losing healthcare and over 300 rural hospitals across the U.S would be at risk of closure. Republicans seem to think that the budget is too tight for healthcare for 17 million Americans, but there’s enough room for another tax cut for billionaires.

RIPS AWAY FOOD FROM CHILDREN AND SENIORS

Trump’s big bill for billionaires takes from the poor to give to the ultra-wealthy, leaving working families worse off. Currently over 40 million Americans receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits:

  • 16 million of them are children,
  • 8 million are seniors,
  • 4 million are non-elderly adults with disabilities.

This bill will dramatically raise costs for working families and reduce food assistance for Americans who need it by cutting federal SNAP funding. As the richest nation in the world; there is no excuse for any American to experience hunger.

WORKS IN THE INTEREST OF THE ULTRA-WEALTHY

This isn’t governing. It’s grifting. This bill may be wrapped in populist packaging—but its contents are painfully clear: giveaways for the powerful, and devastation for the rest of us. We need leadership that serves people, not profits—and this bill fails that test on every front.

I will be opposing this disastrous legislation.

Sincerely,

Rep. Mark Takano signature
