Hi everyone! I’m Ashley Cleaves, Legal Content Editor for Democracy Docket. I oversee Democracy Docket’s case database with over 1,000 lawsuits related to voting, redistricting and executive power. Every day my team sifts through countless filings and dockets so you don’t have to!

In these challenging times, I hope to bring some clarity and insight to what’s happening on the docket.

July means blistering temperatures and smothering heat. But as everyone heads out for some much needed fun in the sun, the GOP anti-voting efforts will be in full swing in courtrooms across the country.

To kick off the month, the 3rd Circuit will hear another effort from the GOP to disqualify undated and wrongly dated ballots in Pennsylvania. This issue is no stranger to both federal and state courts and it certainly won’t be the last time we hear about it.

Voter ID will be a hot topic this month as Republicans in Maine ask the state’s highest court to re-write ballot language for a voter ID ballot measure. Pro-voting advocates argue that the ballot language accurately describes the measure, which could make it much harder to vote absentee. Later this month, a federal court will also hear a GOP lawsuit aiming to restrict the use of digital voter ID for students and employees at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.

Finally, in Georgia, a Fulton County judge will hear a dispute over county election board appointments. Republicans are clamoring to get two election deniers appointed to the county’s election board, which is responsible for overseeing the conduct of elections. One nominee already refused to certify an election and the other has challenged thousands of voters in the county he seeks to serve.
