LULAC Honors And Celebrates
Father’s Day 2020

Washington, DC - The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) today
honors and celebrates Father’s Day 2020 with a message that the recent victories
for inclusion and embracing all Latinos in the United States gives us reason to
feel uplifted and be moved to action for better days in weeks and months to come
even in the face of COVID-19. The following is a statement by Domingo Garcia,
LULAC National President.
“For the Latino father whose prayers for years have been that his undocumented
children could live in this country free of fear from deportation because they
were brought here without papers, there is hope once again. My father Alberto
came to America as an undocumented worker at age 17, searching for the American
dream. He got married to my mother, Manuela and I became their first son when she
was 17 and he was 21. Six more children were born and he was starting as a
farmworker in Porvenir, Texas, then construction work in Midland, and finally
Dallas which became our home.
My father was not very educated. He only went to the first grade in Mexico. But
he taught me that when you give your word, you keep it. Also, that working hard
and taking care of your family are a father's priorities. He passed last July and
this is my first Father's Day without him in body, but not in spirit. While a
humble man, un hijo del pueblo, he like so many of our fathers wanted a better
life for his children. Many LULAC fathers have served in the military, as
teachers, business leaders, as elected officials and many, taking care of their
families as padres.
As a father myself of two sons, Fernando and Joaquin, I know what it is to want
the best for your children and to work each day to provide the best life,
education and opportunities for their success. I believe that our most important
job is to remove the barriers of the past that try to keep our next generations
from even making progress. Also, to teach them about their history as my father
taught me because knowing it makes us proud of who we are and where we come from.
This is my wish on this Father’s Day, that you may celebrate with your family and
know how important your example is to your children who will one day raise their
own sons and daughters. In this historic moment of crisis with the Covid-19 and
economic depression it is our fathers, next to our mothers, who stand and keep
our families strong and together.
LULAC will continue to fight for the civil rights of our community and help
Latino fathers in this struggle for a brighter future para todos en su familia.
We must and we will make LULAC united as we continue moving forward.
