Hi John -

On this Father’s Day – as always – I find myself thinking about my own dad, Sargent Shriver. He devoted his life to fighting poverty and racial injustice.

My dad was driven by his faith. His faith demanded acts of hope. That is why I am so hopeful about the day-to-day activism of our incredible community of supporters, like you.

In response to the global pandemic, you have showed up for kids!

You sent 87,275 messages to Congress to help the child care industry survive so parents can go back to work and their kids can continue preparing for kindergarten.

As more children struggle with a lack of food, you generated 35,491 messages in support of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

You demanded that the right to asylum continues to be protected, especially for vulnerable children seeking safety in our country. Congress received 55,309 messages from our supporters about this issue.

And you’ve turned our leaders’ attention to the plight of the world’s most vulnerable children, including refugees and girls. Supporters sent 25,551 messages to Congress urging them to fund a strong international response.

Our powerful network of volunteers organized close to 50 virtual lobbying visits with members of Congress. Our local staff organized online trainings to train our volunteers about how to be effective activists, even during a pandemic.

SCAN staff and volunteers engaging in online advocacy meetings with Representative Rashida Tlaib and Representative Debra Haaland.

This work you’ve done has really raised awareness on how COVID-19 – while thankfully not a major health risk for most kids – is negatively impacting kid’s lives. But there’s more work to be done.

In the weeks ahead, Congress will be debating a new stimulus package to deal with the ongoing economic impact of the pandemic. We’ll need you to ensure they guarantee that children’s needs are front and center.

From saving the child care industry to ensuring children don’t go hungry to preventing children under the age of 5 worldwide from dying from preventable causes, we have our work cut out for us.

And in the states, legislatures will be making difficult decisions about how to balance their budgets. We’ll need you to make sure they don’t do it by cutting early childhood education programs.

I’m grateful knowing that you will be with us every step of the way.

We’ll be in touch soon with more ways you can continue to speak out on behalf of kids. In the meantime, I recorded a short video thanking you and our thousands of other activists for your hard work.

Happy Father’s Day to all of the dads in your lives.

Mark Shriver, President
