What does authentic fatherhood look like?

Dear John,

Happy Father’s Day! As we mark another Father’s Day, I want to take a moment to reflect on the power of fathers in our lives.

We know that not everyone is so fortunate as to have had their birth father in their life. We know that for many, their experience of being a father has sometimes been more difficult than they might have thought. We shouldn’t run from or ignore these realities.

At the same time, we shouldn’t lose hope in fatherhood as one of the essential roles and experiences of a healthy culture.

We celebrate the strength and power of our fathers as leaders, as protectors, as providers, and as nurturers of both healthy families and thriving children.

At Americans United for Life, we are working toward the day when all are welcomed throughout life and protected in law. This vision can never be fully realized without the courage and selflessness of men choosing to become fathers and to continually strive toward authentic fatherhood—whether that takes the form of fatherhood in family life, or fatherhood in a spiritual sense for communities and young people in need of fathers willing to give of themselves through examples of virtue.

Let’s celebrate all of the good fathers in our lives today, but let’s also celebrate and share and reflect on the qualities of authentic fatherhood with our loved ones today! As we do this, we’ll be working toward the day we envision, when all are welcomed throughout life.
