John -- The final vote on Donald Trump’s big, ugly budget megabill could happen TODAY, and it’s still not clear if he has the votes. So we’re keeping the pressure on, and re-sending this urgent email from Saturday on how you can help in this critical moment. -- Robert Reich
Dear John,
Breaking news: Senate Republicans are pushing to begin voting TODAY on Donald Trump’s big, ugly budget megabill — and it’s looking like final passage could be decided by a single vote.
Friends, this may be the most cruel, harmful, and flat-out immoral piece of legislation I’ve ever seen.
As many as 16 million people would be kicked off health insurance. Millions of kids would lose food and nutrition assistance. America’s poorest families would lose about $1,600 per year, while the richest households would gain about $12,000 per year.
It’s Robin Hood in reverse.
The truth is that even Trump knows that this bill is deeply unpopular, and the longer it takes to pass, the more that public outrage will grow. “This bill is like yogurt, not wine,” said one senator. That’s why they’re rushing to ram it through so fast.
Inequality Media Civic Action is pulling out all the stops to mobilize our nearly 10 million followers across social media, and we’re counting on your support to help ramp up the pressure at this crucial make-or-break moment.
Will you make a donation to help educate the public and stop Trump’s big, ugly budget megabill?
According to one recent estimate, for every millionaire household that would get a tax break from Trump’s big, ugly budget megabill, 19 Americans would be stripped of their health coverage.
It’s just plain wrong.
But thanks to a massive outpouring of grassroots opposition, the bill is on the verge of collapse.
Trump can only afford to lose three Republican votes in the Senate, and several GOP senators are expressing serious reservations. In addition, Republicans who voted for the bill in the House — where it passed by just a single vote — are now saying they no longer support it.
The bill is such a mess that Republicans are having to rewrite — or simply remove — large sections that were found to violate Senate rules. Their strategy now is to try to ram the bill through on the weekend, just before July 4, hoping Americans will be too busy enjoying their summer break to notice.
We will not let them get away with it.
This is it. The moment of truth. We’re working to alert the public and keep the phones ringing on Capitol Hill right through the weekend — and as a grassroots-funded organization, we’re counting on your support.
So please make a donation today to help educate the public and stop Trump’s big, ugly budget megabill.
Thank you,
Robert Reich
