As we close out Pride Month, I need to let you know about a particularly shameful part of this past legislative session. Republican lawmakers arrived at the Statehouse facing no shortage of urgent challenges—crumbling roads, underfunded schools, stagnant teacher pay, and a projected $2 billion revenue shortfall.

But instead of addressing those real issues, they prioritized House Bill 1041—a cruel and completely unnecessary attempt to ban transgender Hoosier kids from participating in sports.

Let’s be clear: targeting any group of people with state power is wrong. It’s not just a distraction—it’s dangerous. That’s why I introduced House Amendment #4 to HB 1041, which would have required the State of Indiana to cover funeral expenses in cases where this legislation contributes to the suicide of a kid targeted by this bill. If lawmakers truly believed this bill would do no harm, they should’ve had no problem supporting it.

Instead, they voted it down.

This isn’t just policy—it’s personal. Lives are at stake. And I won’t let this kind of cruelty go unchecked. But I can’t do it alone.
