It’s been a marathon of a month as Congress works through the Big Beautiful Bill in hopes of having it on President Trump’s desk by the Fourth of July.
As of this writing, the Senate is taking part in what is being dubbed a “vote-a-rama ([link removed]) ” on the legislation, after spending the weekend reading ([link removed]) and debating all 940 pages and taking procedural votes.
ConservAmerica has been keeping a close eye on energy tax credit provisions that were enacted in 2022 and are in the crosshairs in the current bill. While we recognize that there is a persuasive case to adjust those credits, we think that policies that are durable, predictable, and support private sector investment are most effective. We also support an all-of-the-above approach, especially in light of the dramatic rise of energy demand.
A few months ago, we released an analysis ([link removed]) that found that removing clean energy electricity credits would raise electricity bills and cause detrimental economic impacts. Our report was recently referenced in this opinion piece ([link removed]) . Jeff Kupfer appeared on conservative talk show host Lars Larson’s show earlier in June to discuss the credits – listen here ([link removed]) . Jeff also laid out how losing the hydrogen credit would affect the state of Pennsylvania here ([link removed]) .
One of the bigger sticking points from an earlier version of the bill was a public lands proposal by Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT). Sen. Lee pulled his language from the bill after an unprecedented response from the hunting, angling, and outdoor recreation population. ConservAmerica will continue to work with stakeholders to identify ways to protect our outdoor heritage and meet the needs of communities across the American west. ConservAmerica Counsel Brent Fewell offered up his own thoughts in a recent piece for Deseret News, which you can read here. ([link removed])
Switching gears, we recently welcomed Dan Mahoney to the team. Dan will be taking deep policy dives on important lands and energy policy issues, such as his first one on Building Resilient Forests ([link removed]) . And ConservAmerica Fellow Patrick Hynes took a more in-depth look at the Supreme Court’s recent NEPA ruling, with this piece in The Hill. ([link removed])
Finally, Roosevelt Conservation Caucus member and Congressional Champion Award recipient ([link removed]) Sen. Thom Tillis ([link removed]) (R-NC) announced his retirement this past weekend. Sen. Tillis has been a true leader in advocating for policies that show a strong economy and healthy environment can go hand-in-hand. He will be missed.
We will be keeping a close eye on the Big Beautiful Bill’s movement this week. This moment in time may feel chaotic, but we believe it is important to take stock in what freedom and liberty mean for us all. We wish you all a happy and safe Fourth of July!
