John – I've heard a lot of feedback on my recent vote to table the impeachment articles, so I'm reaching out because you deserve to know the reason for my decision from me.
There's no question that this President has abused his power – and we have to hold him accountable, which is why I'm working with Rep. Ro Khanna and Rep. Thomas Massie on bringing forward a War Powers Resolution Act.
Overriding the power of Congress has been an issue for Presidents of both parties. This is why I also worked with my colleagues during the last administration to bring forward the War Powers Resolution when President Biden bombed Yemen. However, the motion for impeachment, which I voted to table, wasn't a serious effort to hold this President accountable. It was rushed, with no time for members to read or weigh it. It also had no chance to pass through a Republican-controlled House and Senate. That's not how we get justice – that's how we lose focus.
And make no mistake, having congressional Democrats waste time with yet another pointless impeachment motion is exactly what Donald Trump and Republican leadership want. I refuse to play into their hands.
There were many Democratic Congresspeople who voted to table this resolution. These are people I trust, including Rep. Jamie Raskin, who led the second impeachment trial and is one of the foremost constitutional experts in Congress. His take is that we need a more serious, strategic approach – and I agree.
While progressives are forming a circular firing squad over who voted for the articles of impeachment, we're in the middle of a reconciliation bill that could have massive, long-term negative consequences for the people of Oregon and across the country. This bill is packed with dangerous provisions that threaten the future of Medicaid, hand out new tax breaks to the richest Americans, sell off public lands, and gut environmental protections. These aren't headlines – they're real consequences that will hit working people hard. And we can not let ourselves be distracted.
Beyond the Big Bogus Bill, the Supreme Court is taking aim at birthright citizenship, rolling back LGBTQ rights, and threatening decades of settled law. That's where our energy needs to be – pushing back in a way that makes a difference.
The majority of people that I represent are tired of symbolic fights that don't lead anywhere. They want us to use every tool we have to protect democracy, defend basic rights, and make the government work for them.
I'm not here to posture – I'm here to fight for real change. And as someone who has stood with me in the past, I wanted you to know that – straight from me.
