THE FORUM DAILY

As the Supreme Court limits nationwide orders that had halted the executive order to end birthright citizenship, uncertainty and confusion arise among immigrant communities, report Ted Hesson and Kristina Cooke of Reuters.

Legal aid organizations saw an increase in calls over the weekend. For many people, the main concern is having a baby that automatically becomes stateless. Lorena, a Colombian woman, expressed to Reuters: "I don’t know if I can give her [my nationality]. I also don't know how it would work, if I can add her to my asylum case. I don't want her to be adrift with no nationality."

In his piece for Slate, Matt Watkins dives deeper into the realities facing immigrant families should birthright citizenship stop being the law of the land.

As Miriam Jordan reports for The New York Times, the Supreme Court decision did not rule on the constitutionality of the executive order, but rejecting the nationwide injunctions that had blocked the order paves the way for the policy to be enforced, at least temporarily, in most states.

The birthright citizenship restrictions do not take place everywhere immediately, Jordan notes. Those in the 22 states challenging the order will likely try again, putting off the enforcement of such a ruling. In the 28 states where there were no challenges, the order will go into effect after a 30-day delay.

What is at stake? As Jennie said on a statement Friday: “Birthright citizenship is essential to the meaning of being American...Through our history the children of immigrants have helped drive American innovation and economic growth.”
