As protesters in big cities and small towns demanded an end to police brutality, the police responded with even more police brutality.
For decades, the Department of Defense’s “1033 Program” has allowed police departments to obtain billions in surplus military equipment such as grenade launchers, bayonets, riot gear, and sonic weapons.
We fight for memory of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and so many other Americans killed by our militarized police.
The 1033 Program represents just a fraction of the military weaponry police now use.
Police have deployed tear gas, which is banned by the Geneva Convention in wartime. “Less-than-lethal” weapons like rubber bullets and beanbag rounds have been fired at point-blank, potentially deadly ranges.
Military weapons don’t belong on our streets -- and they definitely do not belong in the hands of police that are supposed to protect us.
Thanks for standing up.
