John, In just a moment, I’m going to explain why I am supporting Mike Siegel for Congress. Mike has been fighting for equal opportunity and social justice his entire career. After college, he became a public school teacher, teaching third grade and fifth grade, helping young people learn to read and understand the world. He was a union representative in the teachers union and started free after-school and summer programs that for 15 years have served thousands of low-income children and youth. After spending years in the schools, Mike went to law school so he could take his fighting spirit to the courtroom. Mike challenged racist police policies that targeted Hispanic youth and fought against housing discrimination that left Black and Latino Texans out in the cold. When Mike worked as a city attorney for the City of Austin, he took on Texas Governor Abbott, suing to stop a “show-me-your-papers” bill that Texas Republicans passed to threaten Latino and immigrant communities. Mike also co-wrote the paid sick leave policy for the City of Austin — a critical tool we need to combat the coronavirus pandemic today and help working people build security in the long run. We need Mike’s voice and experience in Congress, where he’ll spend every day fighting for Texans, and I can’t wait to get to work by his side. But Mike is running against one of the wealthiest members of Congress, Michael McCaul. McCaul is practically the poster child of a system rigged to benefit the rich and powerful — he’s spent his tenure in office taking corporate checks and casting votes that help him and his buddies get richer and more powerful.
