The United States Supreme Court ruled in an historic LGBTQ+ employment discrimination case earlier this week, and our side — protecting LGBTQ+ rights in the workplace — won! Federal law now prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. It's about time!
I'm proud of the lawyers who took this case on and of the coalition of state attorneys general — including me — who joined them in an amicus brief to support this fight for civil rights. The result in Bostock v. Clayton County, Georgia, is worth celebrating for all who believe in equality and fairness, especially during Pride Month.
Most of all I'm proud of the plaintiffs, Gerald Bostock, Don Zarda, and Aimee Stephens, who took this fight to our nation's highest court. Don and Aimee didn't live to see Monday's victory, but their courage and perseverance in the face of injustice will surely inspire generations to come.
With this major milestone toward equality under our belts, we now need to be ready for the many fights that lie ahead. Just last week, the Trump administration eliminated a rule that protects trans people from discrimination in health care. These opponents of progress just won't give up!
As the People's Attorney, I will not rest so long as LGBTQ+ people — or any vulnerable community — still face discrimination, barriers to fair treatment, or systemic injustices.
But, for this big moment, let's savor this victory!
