Just a couple weeks ago I marched alongside tens of thousands of people in Boston as well as millions across this country with one simple message: No Kings. Not here. In America, democracy rules.
But today, the Supreme Court issued a decision that strikes a devastating blow at this fundamental idea.
SCOTUS ruled that lower courts cannot issue injunctions that block actions by a President that may be illegal or unconstitutional.
That gives license to Trump to essentially act like a dictator. He can now issue illegal executive orders and the judicial branch is mostly powerless to stop him until SCOTUS weighs in — and we know his extremist appointees will back his agenda almost every time.
I have been ringing the alarm bell for years that something like this will happen. I was one of the first Senators to call out the illegitimacy of this court and call for reform, and I have brought forward legislation to expand the Supreme Court and make right the seats that were stolen by the GOP.
If we are going to stand up to these continued attacks on our democracy, it will require a mass movement for change.
A movement that builds on what we saw at the No Kings and Hands Off rallies, at nonviolent disruptions against ICE in communities across the nation, and at town halls and meetings in neighborhoods like yours and mine.
Chip in to my campaign today as we continue to organize the movement to stop Trump, beat the far-right, and protect and strengthen our democracy. We have a lot of work ahead, and your donation puts critical resources behind that work.
