Dear John,
It all happened so fast.
One minute, Chaplain Rusty Trubey was preaching from the first chapter of Romans. The next, he was being questioned by VA police.
Why? Someone, according to the police officer, complained about his sermon.
Unfortunately, Chaplain Trubey’s problems escalated from there.

Upon hearing the complaint, Chaplain Trubey’s supervisor had him not only investigated, but also removed from his duties as a chaplain and re-assigned to stocking hospital shelves.
When he asked for an explanation, his supervisor said it was due to “inappropriate conduct” and because the message was based on a “very charged and divisive text.”
Soon after, the supervising officer threatened to place a reprimand on his permanent record.
Watch Chaplain Trubey share what happened when First Liberty stepped in to help:

When First Liberty notified the VA facility that we were representing Chaplain Trubey, they immediately removed the threat of a reprimand.
And when the same VA’s supervising officer tried to censor all chaplains, we stopped that too.
To put an end to the proposed censorship policy, we appealed to Secretary of Veterans Affairs Doug Collins. He not only killed the policy, but also recognized that all VA chaplains are protected when preaching according to their religious beliefs.
John, you made that possible.
Because of the faithful support of people like you, we can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with clients like Chaplain Trubey and fight back when faith comes under attack.
Whether the attack takes place in the military, the classroom or the town square, we’ll go wherever and whenever we are needed to make sure religious freedom is protected.
Join First Liberty and Boldly Stand for Religious Freedom
Right now, there are people of faith all over the country facing attacks by school districts, military supervisors and local leaders. People like:
- Marisol Arroyo-Castro who’s been removed from the classroom for displaying a small cross.
- Jace Yarbrough who’s been punished by the Air Force for a speech given in his civilian capacity encouraging those in the military to serve with integrity.
- Pastor Chris Avell who’s been criminally charged for showing compassion to those in need.
You can be a difference-maker for Marisol, Jace and Pastor Chris. By giving today, you are ensuring that our expert legal team has the resources needed in these critical fights for religious freedom.
And if you make your best gift before June 30th, you will maximize your impact for faith and future generations thanks to our Fiscal Year End $500,000 Challenge Grant.
Will you be a difference maker in these fights for faith?
Yes, I’ll maximize my impact now!
Grateful for you,
Kelly
