In 2024, the voter turnout in Alabama was the lowest for a presidential election since 1988, as less than 59% of eligible voters cast ballots in comparison to the national rate of 88%. This is by design — our state’s history of repressing voter turnout didn’t stop with the dismantling of Jim Crow laws.
Today, old battles have become new again, as Republicans attack voting rights and undermine the ability of Black and minority Americans to participate fully in our democracy.
In Congress, I’m fighting back against any attempts to weaken voting rights — calling out MAGA attacks on the ability of Americans to cast their ballots. But I need your help to keep up the fight. We have an important end-of-quarter deadline coming up, and national Republicans are looking for any sign of weakness in our grassroots movement.

At the federal level, House Republicans passed the so-called “SAVE Act”, which would disenfranchise millions of American voters. The fate of that legislation now lies in the Senate. Here in Alabama, state lawmakers recently refused to consider bills to expand voting access — and our state remains one of the few that does not allow early voting or no-excuse absentee ballots. At the same time, the conservative supermajority on the Supreme Court has continued to chip away at voting rights.
The long-term solution to right-wing attacks on voting rights is federal legislation to guarantee the right of voters to participate in our democracy. We can move in that direction by flipping the House next year, and challenging every attack on voting rights in the meantime.
