John—

Seattle Pride was the first Pride event I ever attended. Twenty years ago, I had just come out, and I decided to volunteer at the festival while I was home from college. Today, I led the Seattle Pride parade as its Grand Marshall. It was a full-circle moment that I think my 19-year-old self would be proud of.

Today’s celebration was also a powerful reminder of just how important and impactful it is to be with community. Queer joy is an act of resistance, something worth celebrating and nurturing, perhaps more now than ever.

Since my very first Pride, so much has changed. Our region, like many others, has seen a proliferation of Pride celebrations and Pride clubs and GSAs in schools – young people today have grown up with marriage equality as the law of the land. But today queer communities everywhere are facing attack after attack.

597 anti-LGBTQ bills have been introduced in state legislatures across the US in the first six months of this year. The Republican-controlled Supreme Court just upheld Tennessee’s Ban on health care for trans Americans. The Trump Administration is withholding federal funding from states that do safeguard queer communities. These are serious threats.

As the first openly LGBTQ+ person to represent Washington in Congress, and a co-chair of the Equality Caucus, I am doing everything in my power to fight back.

We won’t let MAGA extremists write the rules for our future. Not when we have the power to shape it ourselves, not when we fight on with hope and determination.

I was honored to sit down with Bree Coven from the Seattle Times a few weeks back to talk about this fight, what Pride means to me, and more. You can read the full piece here. [[link removed]]
