Dear Friend,
First, a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who responded to Elizabeth’s call to action on Thursday. In two days you have raised almost $30,000 to help clear our party’s election debt.
I know you may be wondering how we ended up with this debt. That’s a fair question.
I want to assure you that we budgeted responsibly for the national campaign. We planned carefully to maximize our resources and we didn’t overspend. So what happened?
Well, several things happened.
The 2025 election was unlike any we’ve seen before. People were deeply shaken by events in the US and scared about what could happen to Canada.
Greens faced an alarming amount of hostility for simply trying to participate in the election. I received distressing reports of Green Party volunteers being verbally abused, and even spit on, for trying to collect signatures to get nominees on the ballot. Many Green Party nominees were pressured to “strategically” drop out, and some did. In the end, only 232 of our 342 nominees made it onto the ballot.
We took another major blow when the Green Party was kicked out of the national debates based on claims that we did not meet the criteria to participate. The Debates Commission was widely criticized in the media for its unfair treatment of the Green Party, but the damage was done.
Ultimately, the 2025 election was one where thousands and thousands of people who usually vote Green felt that they had no choice but to vote Liberal.
The unfortunate result was that for the first time in 25 years our national vote share dropped below 2%. That meant we did not qualify for a 50% rebate of eligible election expenses from Elections Canada. And no rebate meant an unexpected $750,000 shortfall.
Until our finances recover, we’re stuck in survival mode, unable to fully staff our team or effectively prepare for the next election — which could be upon us in less than two years.
Tomorrow is June 30, the end of the second quarter. That’s when all political parties report their fundraising totals to Elections Canada. These numbers become public, and they’re used to gauge our strength.
A strong Q2 finish doesn’t just help us pay down debt — it shows Canadians that we’re still in the fight.
If you can give $400 today, please do. It’s one of the most effective ways to help, and thanks to Canada’s political tax credit, your $400 donation only costs you $100 after the rebate.

And if $400 isn’t in reach, that’s okay. A monthly gift of $10, $25, or whatever fits your budget will help us restore our financial stability over time.
We rely on people who share our values. People who know the climate emergency is real. People who see that too many Canadians are struggling while the ultra wealthy never pay their fair share. People who believe that democracy is stronger when voters have real choices, not just red or blue.
If that’s you, then now is the time. Let’s end this quarter strong, so we can continue to fight for what matters.
With deep thanks,
Paul Manly,
Acting Executive Director, Green Party of Canada
P.S. You can start your monthly donation today and change or cancel at any time. Political donations are eligible for generous tax credits — and your support makes a real difference in what we’re able to do, and how soon we can do it.
