John,

Why is it so difficult to reach a trade deal with the US?

Wasn’t Mark Carney elected prime minister because he supposedly was the best person to work with Trump?

And yet, on Friday, Trump said he is terminating all trade discussions with Canada!

It may just be another mood swing or negotiation tactic on his part, and he will have changed his mind again by next Friday.

But as each other's two largest trading partners, it should be easier than this for Canada and the US to reach a deal.

Trump mentions Canada’s new Digital Service Tax that will apply to US tech giants that sell services here (it actually came into force a year ago, but it will start collecting payments this week).

That tax will of course eventually be passed on to Canadian consumers, just like all taxes on business are. You and I will be paying it!

It’s also not surprising that he again references the excessive tariffs imposed by Canada to stop imports of American dairy products as a justification for his decision.

This has always been a major source of trade conflict between Canada and all its partners, and Trump has complained about it for years.

And of course, in this case too, it’s Canadian consumers who end up paying more for dairy products because the supply management system – supported by all the establishment parties in Ottawa – protects the dairy cartel!

As I have said many times during the election campaign, the best way to strike a trade deal with the US would be to put supply management on the table and get rid of all these silly taxes that drive up the cost of everything for Canadian consumers, while also hurting American exporters.

WE PAY ENOUGH TAXES!

Let’s cut government spending and taxes, and let’s trade freely for everyone’s benefit!

John, the PPC is the only party that fights for Canadian consumers, for cheaper dairy products, and cheaper digital services.
