An update from the office of Congressman Andrew Garbarino | | Remembering Jamie Atkinson | |
Jamie Atkinson, a 19-year-old Community Ambulance Company volunteer and MTA Police Officer at the time of the 9/11 attacks, has passed away following a years-long battle with 9/11-related cancer. He will be laid to rest this Wednesday.
Jamie spent weeks at Ground Zero clearing the pile and dedicated the years that followed to serving his community. His life was marked by courage, compassion, and leadership. From his time at Ground Zero to his work in county emergency coordination and national advocacy, he dedicated himself to serving others. His loss is a significant one, but his legacy will continue to have a lasting impact. Andrew was proud to call Jamie a dear friend and is deeply saddened by his passing. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
| | | SCPD Officers Complete Elite Sniper Training | | A group of outstanding officers has officially graduated from the Suffolk County Police Department Emergency Service Section’s New York State Sniper School. Trained by some of the best in the field, these officers completed a rigorous course under the instruction of SCPD Emergency Service. Andrew applauds their achievement and thanks them for their continued commitment to keeping our communities safe. | | | Discussing Local Health Care Priorities | | This week, Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip hosted an afternoon with elected officials to discuss legislative priorities and ongoing healthcare challenges. Andrew is committed to supporting policies that strengthen Long Island’s healthcare system and ensure continued access to high-quality care for families across the region. | | | CASEWORK HIGHLIGHT: Helping Recover Social Security Funds | |
After her husband passed away, one of Andrew’s constituents faced a sudden financial crisis when their bank placed a hold on his final Social Security disability payment and attempted to withdraw the funds. She had already used the payment to cover her rent. Andrew’s casework team immediately stepped in, and the bank released the funds that same day.
Andrew knows how frustrating dealing with bureaucracy can be. That is why he has an entire team dedicated to helping constituents get what they need from the government. If you need help dealing with a federal agency, contact our office and our team will get to work on your case.
| | Condemning Political Violence | | Political violence has no place in this country. This week, the House passed H.Res. 519, a resolution condemning the horrific and senseless attacks on Minnesota lawmakers. Andrew was proud to support the measure, which sends a clear message that violence has no role in our democracy. The resolution reaffirms Congress’s commitment to preserving a system built not on fear or intimidation, but on civility, open debate, and the peaceful exchange of ideas. Elected officials should be able to serve without threats to their safety, and no disagreement, political or otherwise, justifies violence. Andrew remains committed to defending the institutions that uphold our democracy and to standing against any effort to undermine them through fear or force. | | | Protecting Communities from Drunk Driving | | Drunk driving kills roughly 37 Americans every day, yet current immigration law does not clearly make DUI a deportable offense for illegal immigrants. This week, the House passed H.R. 875, the Jeremy and Angel Seay and Sergeant Brandon Mendoza Protect Our Communities from DUIs Act, which would make driving under the influence grounds for deportation and inadmissibility. Andrew voted in favor of the bill, which, like his POLICE Act, ensures that illegal immigrants who commit serious crimes and endanger public safety are removed from our communities. | | | House Passes Special Interest Alien Reporting Act | | The Biden Administration created the worst border crisis in American history, allowing millions of illegal immigrants to flood into our country, including individuals from countries that harbor or support terrorism. This week, Andrew voted for the Special Interest Alien Reporting Act. This bill requires the Department of Homeland Security to regularly report how many foreign nationals from terrorist-linked countries are attempting to enter the United States illegally. It is a national security imperative to track these attempts and understand the scope of the threat. Andrew will continue fighting to keep dangerous individuals out of the country. | | | Thanks for reading! Do you know someone who might like to receive these updates?
