Hi all,
On Tuesday evening, the Tempe City Council will be voting on a new proposed ordinance that would place severe restrictions on any public gathering of 30 people or more. Under the new rules, anyone organizing anything from bike rides to birthday parties to mutual aid events would be required to get a permit from the city. Permits will cost $150 or more, and organizers would need to get them 60 days in advance. Even protests and rallies would be covered under the new rules in most instances.
These changes come in the midst of a broader crackdown on anyone trying to provide support to our unhoused neighbors. In February, our own chapter's Really Really Free Market, which had been running without issue for years, was shut down by the cops. The same thing has happened to many other community and mutual aid groups all over Tempe.
On Tuesday, we'll be showing up to the Tempe City Council meeting to urge the City Council to vote NO on the proposed ordinance. We'll demand that they stop cracking down on people simply for supporting and taking care of our neighbors. And we'll urge them to do much more to prevent evictions and keep all of us housed in the first place.
We'll meet at 5:30 pm outside the Tempe City Council Chambers (31 E 5th St, Tempe, AZ 85281). RSVP here if you can join us, and make sure to wear red!
In solidarity,
Phoenix DSA
