A few years ago, Christian Nationalism came to a boiling point here in Texas when Republicans introduced a bill that would force public school teachers to display the Ten Commandments in every classroom.
As a Presbyterian pastor and former public school teacher, I couldn’t stay silent.
I called out their bill for what it really was: un-constitutional, un-American, and deeply un-Christian. Jesus calls us to love our neighbors as ourselves — that includes Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, and atheist students. And forcing our religion down their throats is not love.
Texas Democrats stood our ground, and we stopped the Ten Commandments bill from becoming law. But this year, they brought the legislation back — and it just passed into law.
Republicans have long weaponized my faith tradition in a dangerous attempt to turn Texas into a Christian Nationalist theocracy.
But here’s the truth, John:
You can’t be the party of freedom and control women’s bodies.
You can’t be the party of family and love your guns more than our kids.
You can’t be the party of faith and worship at the feet of Donald Trump.
Now is the time for bold action to defeat the extremists and make it clear that Christian Nationalism has no place in America.
