John,
Over the weekend we’re expecting a vote-a-rama, where the Senate will vote on many amendments to their version of Trump’s big, ugly bill. This bill cuts Medicaid, food for kids, student loans and more, to pay for tax cuts for billionaires.
On Monday we’re having a special phone bank with MoveOn and our partners, and we need you and your colleagues to join. We must keep up the pressure to show that the American people oppose this bill.

This bill is fast-moving, so I want to make sure you know where things stand right now. Of course, all of this will change from day to day, but here’s the current situation.
Bad news
Republicans are still:
- Pushing deep Medicaid cuts, which will close rural hospitals and cause millions of Americans to lose health coverage.
- Looking at new ways to cut food assistance for poor kids.
- Trying to block commonsense artificial intelligence regulations.
- Pushing a plan that will give more to the richest Americans, while taking from those who have the least.
Good news
Several provisions in the bill violate the Senate’s rules under the procedure Republicans are using to pass this package. This includes the private school tax credit/voucher plan, attacks on federal employees and their unions, and limiting both Medicaid and Medicare coverage.
What’s next
Senate Republicans are scrambling to rewrite whatever they can, to see if their changes will work procedurally. While millions of Americans struggle to make ends meet, Republicans are trying to pass a billionaires-first tax agenda that will make things even worse by forcing ordinary Americans to pay more for healthcare, food and utilities.
I know we are heading into a holiday week and, for many, the end of the school year. I know many of you need a break. But this is crunch time! And that’s why we need people to turn out on Monday.
Use this link to register for the phone bank, and ask your friends to join too.
In unity,
Randi Weingarten
AFT President
