John, Today is World Refugee Day, and in light of the Supreme Court’s decision this week to prevent the Trump Administration from immediately ending the DACA program, it’s even more important to ensure our immigration system aligns with our American values. We have a long history of welcoming refugees here in Iowa. Republican Governor Robert Ray made Iowa the first state to welcome over a thousand Tai Dam refugees who were fleeing Vietnam in 1975, and since then we’ve accepted refugees from Eastern Europe and from Bosnia who were fleeing conflict in hope of a better life. In this same welcoming spirit, our nation must continue this tradition of being a safe haven for those fleeing violence, poverty, and oppression. But the Trump Administration’s rhetoric and policies have been directly opposed to this spirit and the spirit of our founding. The Trump Administration has cut the number of refugees we accept annually down to a tiny fraction of just 18,000 -- and worse still, they are on track to accept zero refugees this year. And even though they’re supposed to, they’ve failed to consult Congress when decreasing these refugee numbers. We cannot close America’s doors to the most vulnerable. That’s not who we are. If you agree, add your name to our petition ensuring that America remains a beacon of peace, prosperity, and hope for those around the world. We must follow the tradition of Governor Ray and thousands of Iowans who have welcomed refugees into our communities. We have to live up to our founding, and welcome the oppressed, desperate, and hopeful from around the world. Since the 1970s, Iowans have opened their arms to everyone needing a safe, welcoming place to live -- and it’s important we carry on that tradition. John, please add your name beside J.D.’s and call for the refugee resettlement program to match our American values. Thank you, Team Scholten |
