John,
Summer’s here, and I know New Yorkers are looking for fun, memorable ways to spend the warmer months.
But I know how challenging it can be for families to meet the kids’ expectations.
Well, I’m here to tell you: You don’t need to get on a cruise or go to Disneyland to make incredible summer memories.
I’m fighting to make New York State more affordable all year round, and summer is no exception.
So, from me to you: Here are some tips on how to have family fun in New York, for the best (or no) price.
1. Hike a trail
New York is home to some of the greatest natural wonders in the country.
Whether it’s hiking, swimming, biking, or just spending time with family, there’s a lifetime of memories to be made in our State Parks.
I want to make sure you’re able to enjoy all our state has to offer, and our State Parks system offers discounts for frequent visitors, working families, seniors, veterans, and more. Learn more and see if you qualify for one of these programs. <[link removed]>
2. Hit the beach for Independence Day
Long Island is home to some of the East Coast’s most stunning beach destinations.
Thanks to our investments, <[link removed]> the A train is running more frequently and reliably – good news for New Yorkers heading to the Rockaways this summer!
If you’re heading to Jones Beach, make sure to visit the Bandshell, which is hosting free concerts, movie nights, and other events at the Field 4 Boardwalk every night through August 31. <[link removed]>
Not near Long Island? No problem.
Head to Empire State Plaza in Albany for a free Summer at the Plaza event, <[link removed]> or to one of our New York State Parks for free or low-cost events all year long. <[link removed]>
Plus, New York State pools and beaches are open in every corner of the state! <[link removed]>
3. Save money with Summer Saturdays
The “Summer Saturday” discount program is back!
Starting July 5, Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North monthly ticket holders can ride anywhere on their networks every Saturday at no additional cost.
Even better: You can bring along up to two friends for just $1 each way.
Whether you’re heading to the beach, the city, or somewhere in between, this is a great way to enjoy all New York has to offer. Learn more about Summer Saturdays and make your travel plans! <[link removed]>
4. Celebrate the Erie Canal’s 200th birthday
As a proud Buffalonian, I’ll take any chance to brag about the Erie Canal. This year, we’ve got a big reason to celebrate: Two hundred years ago, the Erie Canal opened, reshaping New York’s economy and helping to build our state into what it is today!
Communities all along the Canal are celebrating this milestone with events throughout the summer, <[link removed]> from Albany to Buffalo and beyond – and we’re working to make sure it will continue serving New Yorkers for another 200 years. <[link removed]>
Find a free event near you. <[link removed]>
5. Head to the New York State Fair
Fried dough, ferris wheels, farm animals, and lots of music. The State Fair is one of our most beloved New York traditions.
To kick off the carnival season, the Fair is offering a Star-Spangled Savings promotion, with tickets available online for just $6.28 each including fees, now through July 6. Learn more and get your discount! <[link removed]>
No matter where you live in our great state, I know the pressures you’re facing – and every one of these programs are part of my work to make New York more affordable for you and your family.
New York homeowners are getting money back in their pockets through the STAR Rebate <[link removed]> this summer, and Inflation Refund checks <[link removed]> will be sent out to millions of New Yorkers starting this fall — no hoops to jump through, just money back in your pocket.
As you enjoy all the beauty and excitement New York offers this summer, I’m going to keep working to make life easier for you.
Ever Upward,
Gov. Kathy Hochul
