Syria’s children are facing one of the longest and most dire refugee crises in the world.

Violence has forced families to flee, uprooting children from their communities and leaving them with limited access to education, basic health care services and sufficient nutrition.

Children and families in Syria have lived through 14 years of conflict:

May 2011 Escalating civil unrest and violence force Syrian families to begin leaving their homes in search of safety.

June 2014 Three years later, more than 3 million Syrians have been displaced, becoming the world’s largest refugee group.

February 2019 Displaced Syrian children in neighboring Jordan, Lebanon,Turkey and within Syria faced a devastating winter storm with freezing temperatures, heavy winds and snow.

May 2025 While over 690,00 children have returned to Syria, they now face a landscape filled with landmines and explosive remnants of war.

Throughout this crisis, UNICEF has responded to meet children’s needs and help families cope with the impact of conflict. Last year in Syria, UNICEF reached:

465,000 children under the age of 1 with routine vaccines
1.8 million children with formal education services
2.2 million children and women with access to primary health care
