In my first race for district attorney, we took on an entrenched incumbent with a reputation for bruising attacks. It was always going to be an uphill fight, but I knew that if we could just break through the noise and give people a reason to believe, we could build a winning campaign.

And that’s exactly what we did. I’d take my ironing board (it makes for a quick standing desk!) and a stack of fliers to set up outside grocery stores on Saturday mornings.

Shoppers usually looked a little confused when they heard out of left field: “Hi! I’m Kamala Harris. I’m running for district attorney, and I hope to have your support!” Our team organized on every block and in every neighborhood -- and it worked. We won.

Running for president is a little different. Our movement is bigger, we’re reaching more voters across the country, and we’ve upgraded from an ironing board to spread our vision.
