John,
Today, we honor the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising on June 28, 1969, sparked when police violently raided the Stonewall Inn, a haven for LGBTQ+ communities in New York City's Greenwich Village.
This raid ignited powerful resistance and days of fierce protests against police brutality, led predominantly by Black and Brown queer folks.
Pride month exists today because of the courageous defiance, uncompromising demand for liberation, and abolitionist resistance of queer folks.
These days, Pride can feel like an opportunity for corporations to print out some rainbow stickers, make their logo rainbow-colored for a month, and pat themselves on the back. But the revolutionary history of Pride can’t be erased, no matter how much some people try to sanitize it.
There is no Pride without resistance to violent oppression. Black, Brown, and queer communities have consistently led movements for justice, dignity, and freedom, pushing this country forward in the face of fierce opposition. From Stonewall to today's abolitionist movements, our LGBTQ+ family has always been at the forefront, fighting for a world free from police violence, systemic oppression, and state-sanctioned discrimination.
Sadly, that very resistance remains vital today. Lawmakers have introduced over 500 anti-LGBTQ+ bills this year alone, targeting our communities with hateful, discriminatory laws. Black LGBTQ+ people are disproportionately impacted by this bigotry.
By celebrating Pride, we recommit ourselves to resistance. We will continue to follow in the footsteps of those who bravely fought at Stonewall and continue the fight for a liberated future.
Together, let's uplift their legacy by dismantling oppressive systems, defunding police, and building communities of care and justice where every Black and queer life can thrive.
Happy Pride; rooted in resistance, carried forward in love.
In fierce solidarity,
Black Lives Matter 🖤
Our grassroots movement is pushing for Black liberation every single day. We are striving to create a world where Black people do so much more than just survive. It’s time we thrive.
As an organization one of our biggest hurdles is consistency.
A recurring contribution of anything you can afford goes a long way as we plan for the months, years, and even decades ahead. This is the most effective way for small-dollar donors (like you) to power our Black liberation work.
Will you make a recurring contribution of $5 or more today so that we can keep building momentum for our movement?

Black Lives Matter imagines a world where Black people across the diaspora thrive, experience joy, and are not defined by their struggles.
In pursuing liberation, we envision a future fully divested from police, prisons, and all punishment paradigms and which invests in justice, joy, and culture. Email is the most important way we keep in touch with our supporters. But we know there's a lot going on.
