Dear John,

International Pride Day is recognized on June 28th each year in commemoration of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York City. On this day 56 years ago, police forces raided the Stonewall Inn. Those inside pushed back, sparking a widespread resistance movement against police brutality and discrimination against LGBTQ+ people that led to the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement still ongoing today.

PFLAG has been a part of that movement from its roots — our founder’s son, activist Morty Manford was at Stonewall and his work led to his parents, Jeanne and Jules, becoming vocal and active forces in the movement for LGBTQ+ justice and equity.

Continue to shore up their legacy with a gift to PFLAG National today.

We know the complicated feelings many LGBTQ+ people and their loved ones are having this Pride Month. There are celebrations of the love, joy, and community found in living authentically. There are reminders that Pride started as — and is still — a protest. And there is pain and fear from the ongoing, relentless attacks against LGBTQ+ people.

We also know that the recent increase in anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment and action comes alongside rising systematic attacks on immigrant and BIPOC communities, and the current wave of anti-trans legislation and rhetoric.

So today, we honor International Pride Day by uplifting the leaders at Stonewall — major figures in the resulting resistance movement, including Black and brown trans women like Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Stormé DeLarverie, and Miss Major Griffin-Gracy.

We urge you to follow their lead — and let YOUR love lead you to take action.

With just three days left until the end of Pride Month, please make a gift to PFLAG National to fuel our decades-long continued unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access.

In solidarity, and with great thanks,

Brian K. Bond (he/him)
