It’s not quite the Lake Michigan of her childhood, but Hanna Theile has found familiar waters (and some precious cool during a heat wave) in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County’s public pools.

Available to residents at a low cost, those 20 pools offer a place of joy and belonging to people from all walks of life — kids taking their first lessons, after-work lap swimmers, seniors doing aerobics, Theile writes in an essay. 

Public pools, while dwindling in recent decades, offer the masses an alternative to country clubs and backyard oases. 

Public pools made me feel at home in Pittsburgh. Let’s keep them afloat.
