John,
Barbara, a 79-year-old retired teacher, was scammed out of $400,000 on Facebook.
The scammer pretended to be a friend, gained her trust, and convinced her to send gift cards over and over until her life savings were gone.
This isn’t a one-off case. It’s happening every day. Facebook and Instagram are flooded with fake ads, phishing messages, and predatory scams that cost victims everything. And they let it happen because tech giant profits from these scams.
The good news is that we’re building a massive public campaign to fight back, demanding that tech platforms finally take responsibility.
But to build pressure, and make this crisis impossible to ignore, we need more stories like Barbara’s. Sharing our stories can expose the true scale of the scam epidemic and help hold the companies profiting from it to account.

Scams thrive on silence and shame. But there’s nothing shameful about being targeted. What is shameful is that billion-dollar platforms refuse to act, while more and more people lose everything.
From miracle cancer “cures” to fake job offers and crypto traps, bad actors are targeting people with lies that look completely real. These scams are spreading through social media platforms and search engines and those companies aren't doing nearly enough to stop them, all while they rake in the profits.
By collecting stories from around the world, we will show just how widespread and devastating this really is. Every story told helps build the case against Meta and other social media sites.
Together, we can push for platform accountability, real protections, and support for scam victims like Barbara – do you have a story to share?
Yes, I will share my story
The Ekō movement is igniting a global campaign to fight back, and stories like this are a powerful way to do it. If this hasn’t happened to you but someone you know then please share this with them so they can tell their story. Let’s expose Meta’s scam machine.
