Yesterday, Democratic U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand went on an Islamophobic rant against New York City’s Democratic nominee for mayor, Zohran Mamdani.

This is just the latest in a flurry of vile, despicable, and anti-Muslim attacks on Zohran coming from BOTH sides of the aisle in light of his decisive primary victory on Tuesday.

Zohran has spoken extensively about being a mayor who will uplift and protect ALL New Yorkers. Despite this, he has faced an outpouring of unchecked Islamophobia and racism from elected officials in both parties.

In the Democratic Party, it’s telling that his detractors are corporate shills — like Crypto cheerleader Gillibrand — who are obviously worried about Zohran’s bold platform to make New York more affordable for working people, including a tax on millionaires and billionaires.

There’s no justification for this kind of hatred, which is why Muslim American members of Congress, including Justice Democrats Rep. Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar, have strongly denounced all of the anti-Muslim rhetoric against Zohran. But like Mehdi Hasan said, EVERY Democrat in Congress should condemn this.

Gillibrand and other Do-Nothing Democrats should be embracing a young, bold, and energizing Democratic leader like Zohran with open arms. Instead, they’d rather sink to the same level as their MAGA counterparts and push ugly lies, Islamophobic smears, and fear-mongering.
