Breaking news from the U.S. Supreme Court, team: they’ve ordered the Louisiana redistricting case to be reheard in the next term.
Here’s what that means right now:
- Louisiana’s current map, which complies with the Voting Rights Act (VRA), remains in place. It ensures that Black voters, who make up about a third of the state’s population, can elect the candidate of their choice in two of Louisiana’s six congressional districts.
- Key protections of the VRA are still intact, but could still be at stake as this case develops.
- Our fight for fair maps and fair representation continues ahead of major elections in 2025, 2026, and beyond — with Republicans continuing to undermine democracy through extreme gerrymandering in an effort to consolidate their own power.
At the NDRC, we’ll keep working to elect fair maps champions in elections that can have critical impacts on the redistricting process. We’ll keep holding the MAGA GOP accountable for trying to silence voters through gerrymandering. And we’ll keep building a truly representative democracy — together.
