Public Lands Should Remain in Public Hands

Image

Public lands in the United States offer a variety of benefits both to the public and our local economies like hunting, fishing, hiking, timber harvesting, and livestock grazing.

H.R. 1, the House of Representatives piece of the reconciliation process, origin       ally contained a provision to authorize the sale of certain public lands in the Western United States.

I joined a group of my colleagues in fighting to remove that provision and was successful in having it stripped before final passage.

When the Senate began drafting their portion of the reconciliation process, the sale of public lands was again included in their legislation, including National Forests in Washington State.

I wrote to Speaker Johnson saying I will NOT support a bill that sells our public lands.

As your Member of Congress, I will continue to fight for our public lands for all who enjoy them and for the many benefits they bring to our communities.

Protecting Medicaid and Rural Hospitals

Image

Rural hospitals are essential to healthcare in Central Washington, and I have always worked to ensure they provide quality, efficient services to those who need them.

The House passed H.R.1 and made changes to the Medicaid provider tax that would allow rural hospitals and providers ample time to adjust under the new policy and strengthen the Medicaid provider process.

The Senate proposed changes to H.R. 1 that would drastically lower the Medicaid provider tax and devastate rural hospitals in Central Washington.

I joined a letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Leader John Thune advocating against cuts that would overwhelmingly harm rural areas.

Protecting Medicaid is essential for the vulnerable constituents in Central Washington who I represent, and I do not support any legislation that threatens access to Medicaid or jeopardizes our rural hospitals and providers.

Delivering for Veterans in Central Washington

Image

Our veterans represent the best of us as Americans. My colleagues and I are keeping our promise to support the brave men and women who have served our country.

On Wednesday, the House of Representatives passed the Fiscal Year 2026 Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, Related Agencies Appropriations Act by the House of Representatives.

This legislation fully funds a strong VA for health care, mental health services, and resources needed to end veteran homelessness.

It also makes strategic investments into our military infrastructure and provides critical funding to the Indo-Pacific region to counter the growing threat from the Chinese Communist Party.

Funding USDA for Farmers and Ranchers

On Tuesday, my colleagues and I on the House Appropriations Committee passed the Fiscal Year 2026 Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill to strengthen the agriculture industry while getting our fiscal house in order.

This legislation adds the Secretary of Agriculture to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) to combat the Chinese Communist Party’s efforts to acquire critical American farmland.

It provides funding for key agriculture research programs that support innovation in our specialty crop industries in Central Washington.

In pursuit of fiscal responsibility, the legislation passed out of committee today reins in spending in areas we can afford while providing producers the resources they need to be successful and competitive across the agriculture industry.

I am also proud to announce funding in this legislation for several projects in Washington’s Fourth District including Astria Toppenish’s Emergency Department, medical staff living spaces at Coulee Medical Center, the expansion of surgical services at Skyline Health, and resources to help finish the new Toppenish Police Department.

Voting to Secure the Border

Image

This week, the House Appropriations Committee passed the Fiscal Year 2026 Homeland Security Appropriations Bill.

I am proud of the work we have done in securing critical investments for a secure border, fighting fentanyl as smugglers attempt to poison our communities, and boosting our cybersecurity capabilities to combat growing threats.

This legislation refocuses the Department of Homeland Security on its fundamental mission: ensuring the safety of Americans and secure national borders.

I was also able to secure funding for the Yakima Valley Office of Emergency Management to help open a fully operational Emergency Operation Center in Yakima County. This center will deliver rapid, coordinated responses to natural disasters such as wildfires, landslides, and severe weather that impact Central Washington every year.

A Successful “Operation Midnight Hammer”

Image

By Rep. Dan Newhouse

Over the weekend, the United States executed precision airstrikes inside Iran, targeting key components of their nuclear infrastructure located in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. Reports suggest this has seriously crippled, and possibly destroyed, Iran’s chances at successfully building a nuclear weapon. Resembling President Reagan’s “Peace Through Strength” approach to foreign policy, these targeted strikes against Iran will hopefully bring stability to the region.

Weeks of negotiations aimed at defusing Iran’s nuclear weapons development program ended with no deal, and the authoritarian regime continuing to enrich uranium to weapons-grade levels. President Trump and his national security team gave Iran a chance by offering a 60-day window to make progress on a deal, which was refused by the regime. The reality we face is a simple one; a nation who chants “death to America” cannot be allowed to have a nuclear weapon, and remaining complicit while they inch closer to achieving their goal was not an option.

“Operation Midnight Hammer” was carried out with incredible skill and precision. Seven B-2 stealth bombers, over 160 supporting aircraft, a powerful submarine, and hundreds of brave servicemembers delivered 14 Massive Ordnance Penetrators, or “bunker busters,” into Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. Traveling over 7,000 miles from Whiteman Airforce Base to their targets, the B-2’s and their crews demonstrated the reach and capabilities of the U.S. military, unmatched by any other in the world.

Israel was essential to the operation carried out by the United States. When Israel discovered Iran was enriching weapons grade uranium, and was dangerously close to a weapon, they took matters into their own hands for their own defense. Without the Israel Defense Force’s elimination of Iranian military leaders, successful due to Mossad’s intelligence on their whereabouts, our servicemembers would not have had the opportunity to deliver the critical strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Marco Rubio made clear this weekend that what happens next is up to Iran, including a potential ceasefire being upheld. The United States will continue to support Israel and their right to self-defense, and the Ayatollah should reflect on this show of strength as a sign that the U.S. and allies in the region will not, under any circumstances, permit the regime to acquire nuclear weapons. This was not an act of war, but the prevention of a nuclear Iran, and by extension, a nuclear war in the Middle East.
