BREAKING NEWS: “Supreme Court to rehear major Louisiana redistricting case” — The Hill
Team, this morning, the U.S. Supreme Court did not issue a decision on Louisiana v. Callais , the Louisiana redistricting case — instead, it ordered the case to be re-argued during the next term.
For now, the state’s current, Voting Rights Act-compliant map remains in place.
But the fight for fair representation continues in Louisiana and across the country as anti-democracy forces keep trying to dilute voters’ power.
While this case proceeds, we’ll continue to monitor it closely to prepare for all potential outcomes. But judicial battles aren’t the only way to deliver a more representative democracy.
Our movement will keep working from the court house steps to community meetings, from legislative hearings to the ballot box — with a multi-pronged approach that includes organizing people for key fights where free and fair elections are on the line.

It’s rare for a case to be re-argued before the Supreme Court like this, but re-arguments often involve important issues. Significant examples include Citizens United , Roe v. Wade , and Brown v. Board of Education .
Louisiana v. Callais , in addition to deciding the future of the state’s congressional map, could determine the fate of critical protections under the Voting Rights Act (VRA).
The state’s current, VRA-compliant congressional districts ensure fair representation for all Louisianans. Black voters, who make up about a third of the state’s population, have the opportunity to elect a candidate of their choice in two of Louisiana’s six congressional districts — a hard-won victory after our affiliate, the National Redistricting Foundation, supported a group of voters who successfully challenged a previous map for violating the VRA. But the new, representative map is still under threat as this case continues — so we must keep organizing.
We’ll keep you updated on what happens next. And no matter the outcome, we’ll keep working to ensure a truly representative democracy that gives every voter an equal chance to make their voice heard.
Make a donation to help protect the gains we’ve made and undo more map manipulation around the country.
