This week, I called for Juneteenth to be a federal holiday and also signed on as an original cosponsor to Senator Tim Scott’s JUSTICE Act to implement solutions to support our police officers and the communities they serve. I also continued to call for smart reopening strategies and fought back against calls for continued lockdowns, and called on Nancy Pelosi to bring the House back to work.

Now, here’s your brief:
JUNETEENTH SHOULD BE A FEDERAL HOLIDAY
Juneteenth should be a federal holiday. 155 years ago Friday, the injustice of slavery was broken in Texas. It is a day that represents our struggle to live up to our great ideals and our founding. Texas was the first state to establish Juneteenth as a state holiday, and making it a federal holiday will serve as a constant reminder of the story of America and our ideals overcoming the sins of humankind.
SENATOR TIM SCOTT'S JUSTICE ACT
IS THE RIGHT APPROACH
All of us - especially cops - want to address police brutality and improve law enforcement. That’s why I signed on as an original co-sponsor to Senator Tim Scott’s (R-SC) JUSTICE ACT to support our police officers and the communities they serve. The wrong solution is vilifying police and encouraging a breakdown of law and order. It must stop. I’m concerned that police officers are being demonized across the country, especially with the radical calls to dismantle the force of dedicated men and women who keep our communities safe. We need to support our law enforcement officers and express our gratitude for their selfless service to our community.
We can do this while also pushing for commonsense measures to improve training, transparency, and accountability in law enforcement. These are not mutually exclusive principles.
WE CAN'T ALLOW FEAR-MONGERS
TO HOLD US CAPTIVE TO FEAR
Millionaires like Beto O’Rourke continue to advocate for universal lockdowns in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We cannot allow these fear-mongers to hold us captive to fear.
We must be honest with the American people about the risks posed by a pandemic without a cure and trust them to safely reopen our economy. We’ve seen record job growth and retail sales in response to states like Texas ending misguided lockdowns.
We still have a long way to go, but Americans are not afraid to return to work or get back to their lives despite what the media wants you to believe. People are eager to engage freely in society again. We need to let them.
PELOSI NEEDS TO GET THE HOUSE BACK TO WORK
While the country is in crisis, you might be asking: where is Congress? While the Senate has been in session working, Nancy Pelosi has kept the House largely in hiding.
The American people expect their leadership to show courage and show up to work during difficult times. Instead, Democrats in the House said it was too risky to show up, and eliminated nearly six weeks of work.
When the country needs its leaders the most, Nancy Pelosi has allowed the House to abandon our post. Remember this in November.
