Peace Through Strength, Not Appeasement
This past weekend, President Trump ordered targeted strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Those strikes were entirely consistent with President Trump’s America-First foreign policy.
During his first term in office, President Trump’s foreign policy was the textbook case of peace through strength.
He built closer ties with our allies in Asia, including India; Australia; and Japan. He also negotiated the historic Abraham Accords, while fostering stronger relations with our neighbors here in America’s backyard.
At the same time, President Trump put America’s enemies on notice, reversing the Obama years of appeasement.
He eliminated ISIS, killing its leader, Al-Baghdadi. Trump also took out Qasem Soleimani, the senior Iranian general who had American blood on his hands.
Just as he did with his decisions to take out Al-Baghdadi and Soleimani, Trump put America’s enemies on notice Saturday night with his strikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities.
The President and his foreign policy team gave Iran opportunity after opportunity to come to the negotiating table and make a deal. At the same time, President Trump was consistent that Tehran could not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon as part of any deal.
But when Tehran refused, the President was left with no choice but to send a message that America would no longer sit back and allow our enemies to threaten our national security or that of our allies.
Other countries in the Middle East like Saudi Arabia and the UAE have already condemned Iran’s retaliatory strike on our military base in Qatar.
Iran is now finding itself further isolated and without any allies in the region, because President Trump was unafraid to enforce his red line against Tehran. They know that Trump wasn’t bluffing.
The last 4 years have shown us that weak leadership at home enables hostile regimes to test America’s limits, which only makes us unsafe here in Indiana.
Just look at the failed Biden-Harris foreign policy: the disastrous Afghanistan withdrawal; Russia’s invasion of Ukraine; and Hamas’ October 7th attack on Israel.
All while Communist China lurked in the background, playing by its own rules. President Biden’s foreign policy did not keep Hoosiers safe. When you have a weak President, you invite the aggression of your enemies.
President Trump has long understood that the American people never supported ‘forever wars’ with unclear goals and no clear metrics for success.
But at the same time, President Trump understands that when it comes to setting a red line, he will actually follow through and enforce it, sending a clear message that our enemies in Beijing and elsewhere should heed.
That’s what an America-First foreign policy means: peace through strength, not appeasement. And sometimes, you have to show strength.
