As our country has become more polarized, the end of the Supreme Court term is no longer just watched by lawyers with pending cases. It has become an event in the political calendar. And with attacks on democracy more frequent and severe and the outcome of elections more consequential, all eyes have been focused on two big cases.

The first, Trump v. CASA, Inc., decides when federal courts can block illegal and unconstitutional actions of the government on a universal basis. The other, Louisiana v. Callais, involved the fate of Louisiana’s congressional map. At a time when the Court is under increasing pressure from the president and suffering from lower approval numbers from an increasingly skeptical public, each of these cases seemed like an odd choice for the Court to hear in the first place. 

If the Court aimed to disentangle itself from partisan politics, it did itself no favors today...
