Dear John,

There’s been a lot going on in Washington recently, and I wanted to give you an update.

Legislative Update:

This week, I reintroduced my bipartisan Veterans Border Patrol Training Act. This is legislation that I introduced with my Democratic colleague, Jimmy Panetta, that would help military service members transitioning out of the military shift their skills into becoming civilian Border Patrol agents. For years, Border Patrol has faced a shortage of agents that work to keep our border safe and intercept threats to our nation. The Veterans Border Patrol Training Act helps veterans transition into civilian life in a career that requires many of the skills they learned and mastered in the military.

In case you missed it, I recently cosponsored the Building Unity through Dual Sponsors (BUDS) resolution to help Congress work in a more bipartisan way. As the Co-Chair of the Civility and Respect Caucus, promoting bipartisan cooperation is incredibly important. This resolution will make it easier to identify bipartisan measures and build support for their passage. That means real results for our constituents, and I am proud to support it.

Speaking with Key Government Officials:

While in Washington this week, I had the opportunity to question Frank Bisignano, Commissioner of the Social Security Administration, about implementation of the Social Security Fairness Act, a law I helped pass. I also asked him about longstanding issues with downtime on the website that are in the process of being fixed.

I also had the opportunity to speak with Thomas E. Austin, Architect of the Capitol, about ongoing preservation and renovation efforts on the U.S. Capitol campus. Preserving our history and heritage is incredibly important to me, and I am looking forward to working with him on this effort.

Keeping Americans Safe:

This week, I led a group of 24 of my House colleagues in a letter to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem to learn more about potential U.S. vulnerabilities to drone attacks at sites like military bases, government buildings, and critical manufacturing sites. Ensuring our service members and national interests are protected in an era of changing threats is essential, and I want to work with the administration to make sure we are proactive in our leadership.
