AAAFund Condemns U.S. Supreme Court Ruling Undermining Reproductive Care and AANHPI Health Equity

Washington, D.C. – The Asian American Action Fund (AAAFund) expresses deep concern over the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, which allows states to remove Planned Parenthood from Medicaid programs. This ruling represents a significant setback for reproductive health access and equity, particularly for low-income women and communities of color across the United States.

“This ruling places the health and well-being of countless women—especially those in marginalized communities—in jeopardy,” said Albert Shen, National Chair of AAAFund. “We cannot ignore the devastating implications this decision will have on AANHPI women, whose voices are too often excluded from national conversations on reproductive rights.”

The 6–3 decision opens the door for state-level defunding of a trusted healthcare provider that has long served millions of Americans with essential services—including cancer screenings, contraceptive care, prenatal support, and more. It is expected to disproportionately impact women of color, including the nearly one in five ([link removed]) Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) women of reproductive age who rely on Medicaid for care.

Among Southeast Asian and Pacific Islander populations, the impact is especially acute. Medicaid utilization rates reach as high ([link removed]) as 62% for Bhutanese women and 43% for Hmong women—groups already facing limited access to culturally competent providers, language barriers, and high rates of undiagnosed conditions. The removal of Planned Parenthood from Medicaid programs threatens to deepen existing disparities in health outcomes and access.

AAAFund has long supported Planned Parenthood and the broader reproductive justice movement, grounded in the belief that every person deserves access to compassionate, affordable, and inclusive healthcare. We reaffirm that commitment in the face of this deeply consequential ruling.

This decision is not merely about the redirection of funding—it is about upholding the values of equity, autonomy, and dignity for all. AAAFund calls on policymakers, community leaders, and voters to join us in protecting the healthcare rights of AANHPI communities and all those affected by this decision.

“Reproductive rights are on the ballot. Democracy is on the ballot. We will not go back,” concluded Shen.
