This week, I joined United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Andrew Wheeler in Sheboygan to announce that Door and Inland Sheboygan County are now meeting cleaner air quality standards.

Before this week, a major factor as to why Sheboygan County was not meeting federal air quality standards was due to the EPA's placement of a sensor in its air monitor network that logs ozone pollution from other industrial areas on Lake Michigan as pollution created in Sheboygan. These other areas, like Chicago, create ozone pollution, which is blown over the lake and into Sheboygan County, resulting in higher readings for the sensor placed right along the lake. The readings on this particular sensor have been inconsistent with those in the rest of the state and you only need to go a few miles inland to see this. This left Sheboygan County with restrictive regulations that have no effect on the pollutants created elsewhere. For far too long, companies have been required to jump through unnecessary hoops in order to grow, thus discouraging many from doing so. That is why I have been working to make this correction since my time in the state legislature and am glad that it is finally being done.

I applaud the Trump Administration and the EPA for recognizing the error of the previous administration’s interpretation of the Clean Air Act’s national ambient air quality standards and thank Administrator Wheeler for coming to Sheboygan to inform the public of these long-overdue changes.

Earlier this year, I began accepting entries for the 2020 Artistic Discovery Competition. The Artistic Discovery Competition is open to all high school students in Wisconsin’s Sixth District. The winner will have his or her artwork displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year in an exhibit that features winners from other congressional districts across the country.
