Dear Friend,

Over the last several weeks, nearly 15,000 Michiganders have written into my office about how losing access to Medicaid would be detrimental to themselves and their families.

Under a bill recently passed by Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives that is under consideration now by Republicans in the U.S. Senate, Medicaid could be cut by $880 billion and hundreds of thousands of Michiganders could lose access to their health care.

That’s why yesterday, stakeholders across Michigan delivered binders containing the nearly 15,000 stories I received on the devastating impact of Medicaid cuts to Republican members of Congress who represent Michigan. From Michiganders who will no longer be able to afford their parents’ nursing home to families who will be unable to pay for their children’s chemotherapy, these stories show the devastating impact cutting Medicaid will have on the health and wellbeing of hundreds of thousands of people in our state.

These binders are more than just words on paper. They represent real Michiganders who are facing devastating consequences if Republicans succeed in passing their budget bill. I hope Representatives Tom Barrett, Bill Huizenga, and John James take the time to read these stories and take action to protect their constituents. Because for the people in their districts and across Michigan, this isn’t just politics—it's life or death.

We need your help. See below about how to get involved to help stop Congress from terminating health care for up to 750,000 Michiganders.

Sincerely,

Medicaid Cuts Impact

Medicaid provides a lifeline to 2.6 million Michiganders, and Republican cuts will terminate access to care for our neighbors, family, and friends who need it most. These cuts would not only terminate health care for millions of our most vulnerable Michiganders but also jack up costs on everyone.

In April, I signed an executive directive [ [link removed] ] instructing MDHHS to identify the potential impact Republican-proposed cuts to Medicaid would have on Michiganders’ health.

In addition, we asked Michiganders to share their opinions on proposed Medicaid cuts. Michiganders sent me a clear message: "Hands off Medicaid!" 95% of the over 16,000 Michiganders who wrote in said that it is extremely important to them that Congress not make cuts to Medicaid.

stories

*Seniors: *Medicaid covers 168,000 seniors, ensuring they have access to the critical care, prescription drugs, and medical procedures they need to stay safe and healthy. Michigan’s nursing homes receive over $3 billion in Medicaid funding per year, and three in five nursing home residents are on Medicaid. Proposed cuts would gut funding directly from Michigan nursing homes.

*Pregnant Women: *Medicaid covers 45% of births statewide and provides thousands of pregnant women access to critical prenatal care, prescriptions, and procedures, helping them stay safe and healthy. The proposed cuts would affect Michigan hospitals, limiting their ability to provide care to pregnant women across the state. Specifically, expecting moms would have reduced access to services like regular checkups, screenings, and counseling, negatively impacting their ability to have a healthy and safe pregnancy, labor, and delivery.

*Rural Areas: *Medicaid cuts would have a disproportionate impact on Michigan’s rural areas where over 60% of births are covered by Medicaid. Proposed reductions threaten essential labor and delivery services, putting pregnant women in unnecessary danger by requiring them to drive further and spend more just to access care.

*Michiganders with Disabilities: *Medicaid covers 300,000 people with disabilities, ensuring they have access to the critical care, prescription drugs, and medical procedures they need to stay safe and healthy. Many Michiganders with disabilities rely on Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) providers which receive more than $1.5 billion in Medicaid dollars each year. The services they provide range from personal care and counseling to energy assistance, and transportation. Proposed cuts could gut millions of dollars from HCBS, threatening Michiganders with disabilities who rely on these providers to prevent costly hospitalizations or avoid institutional placements.

*Michigan’s Economy: *Medicaid plays a key role in supporting the health of Michigan's economy. Michigan’s health care industry has a total economic impact of $77 billion per year: greater than any other industry in the state. Medicaid expansion alone sparked the creation of more than 30,000 new jobs. If Republicans succeed, Michigan hospitals could lose out on half a billion dollars in Medicaid funding annually, threatening thousands of jobs. As a result, hospitals in local and rural communities across Michigan will close, threatening access to care, raising prices, and forcing people to drive further for health care.

Help Stop Medicaid Cuts – Contact your Representatives

Currently, Republicans in the U.S. House have passed a budget bill, including an $880 billion cut to Medicaid. The bill has moved onto the U.S. Senate. If passed, this would be the largest cut to Medicaid in its 60-year history. Nationwide, millions would lose access to health care and the cost of health care will go up for every single American.

If you are concerned about how President Trump and Republicans’ proposed Medicaid cuts could hurt you and your family, it’s important you take action.
